Gloriana sighed. She was apart from Zachary and she didn't like it all that much. She knew that they couldn't, and wouldn't, be together 24/7, but she liked to think that they would do the best that they could. But, the truth of the matter was, Zachary was on a date-like thing, and Gloriana needed to get out of the house for a little bit. Since it was a gloomy day outside, Gloriana had decided to go into Port Angeles and had headed straight for the bookstore. Gloriana loved to read, but due to the fire that had tore her family apart, she had lost a lot of her favorite books and while the Taylor's had done everything they possibly could to get Gloriana and Zachary's favorite things back, it wouldn't be the same without the sentimental feelings that came with them. Gloriana wanted to get as many of her favorite books as she could, without her adoptive parents or her brother knowing so that she could try to re-create those sentimental feelings and memories that would not be lost in a mysterious fire. As she looked around the book store, she sighed again as she made her way over to the shelves that held the fiction books. "Why did that fire have to happen and destroy everything? My family, my favorite books, everything that was dear to me?" Gloriana whispered to herself as a tear rolled down her cheek.

Nick walked through the aisles of the bookstore, a pile of books already secured neatly under his arm. He'd decided to take up a more permanent residence in the area, as opposed to his usual habit of just passing through a place or remaining only a week or so. Normally, he only kept his favorite books with him, carrying them around in his travels, but now that he was hanging around for a while, he decided to buy some new ones, replace a few worn out copies.
As he continued on his way, he bumped into a young lady. "Oh, I'm sorry, miss," He said, turning around to look at her. He could tell quickly enough that she was another vampire-not surprising, he'd thought he had smelled one when he came in. His amber eyes focused on the tear running down her cheek. "Everything alright?"

"It's okay." Gloriana said with a small smile after a guy accidentally bumped into her. "I'm fine, just remembering a very sensitive subject." she added when he asked if everything was alright. Brushing the stray tear away with her hand, she felt a little stupid for not introducing herself. "Hi, I'm Gloriana Taylor. What's your name?" she asked sticking her hand out for a handshake.

"Ah," He replied simply. He got the feeling that he shouldn't press her about whatever she was thinking of. It seemed to depress her, and he'd just met her. It really wasn't his business, so he decided to just drop the subject.
He took hold of her hand and shook it as she introduced herself. "I'm Nick Beckett," He told her with a smile, "A pleasure to meet you, Gloriana." He glanced around the store, and seeing others inside, he dropped his voice to a volume only the two of them would be able to her. "How long have you been one of us?" He asked her, more curious than anything.

Gloriana's eyes widened when Nick asked the question. "My brother and I were turned 10 years ago. How did you know and how long have you been one yourself?" Gloriana asked, shock coming through her voice, and most likely, in her eyes as well.

A small smirk played on Nick's lips at the shock she showed. Perhaps she hadn't come in contact with many other vampires in the past, got into the habit of assuming everyone else was human. He wasn't sure. "I could tell by your scent," He said simply, "And the fact that your skin didn't feel burning hot when you shook my hand."
He paused a moment, quickly doing the math in his head. "I've been a vampire for 62 years," He told her. They weren't really that far apart in age, considering how long they would live.

"Wow, 62 years? How old were you when you were changed? You look at least 18, if not 19." Gloriana said with a smile, starting to like talking to Nick.

Nick smiled back at her. "I was seventeen when I changed," He said, "It was three days before my eighteenth birthday, though. So I'm not really sure which age counts." He'd been hit by a car, and woke up on his eighteenth birthday, as an immortal vampire. He was a little surprised that she thought he looked a little older; no ever told him that before.
"What about you?" He asked, referring to both her age and how long she'd been a vampire. He liked talking to this girl, and he wanted to know more about her.

Gloriana smiled. "I was turned when I was 18. After a really horrible thing happened to my parents. But that's a topic for another time." she added. "Do you want to head up to the front to get your books and then take a walk around the town?" she asked, tilting her head to the side.

When mentioned that something horrible had happened to his parents, he wondered if that was what she had been remembering before. But she obviously didn't want to talk more about it, so again, he didn't press her about it. He nodded at her suggestion to take a walk around the town. "Sure," He said, "That sounds great." He said, giving her another smile. He went to the front counter, and paid for his things, taking the bag. He turned and went to Gloriana's side. "Ready to go?" He asked her.

"I'm ready if you are." Gloriana said, thankful for the fact that she couldn't blush any more. As she walked past him, Gloriana made sure that her hand brushed his, just a little, hoping that he would understand her meaning by the gesture. "How long have you lived around here?" she asked, trying to keep the conversation from going into silence.

As she walked past him, he felt her hand brush lightly against his. Taking it as a signal from her, rather just an accident, he reached out and gently took hold of her hair. Hopefully, this was she had been trying to get across, and she wouldn't yank her hand away. "I haven't lived here long," He told her, "I just got into town about a week ago. I decided to stay here longer than I usually hang around a place though. Don't really know why, just wanted a change from traveling, I guess. Have you live around here long?"

If it was still possible, Gloriana was sure that goosebumps would have ran up her arm when Nick took her hand in his. "Well, before I was turned, my family and I lived in the outskirts of Seattle, and then after the incident, Zachary and I headed away from Seattle and we ran into a man, our adoptive father Mark, a few miles away and have lived her in Port Angeles ever since, which has been 10 years." Gloriana said with a sigh. She knew that there would be no way of answering Nick's questions without having to mention the "incident".

He knew she'd tell him about this 'incident' eventually, and not wanting to re-open old wounds, Nick didn't ask about it, yet again. He listened intently to her story. "Ten years?" He asked, "I'm impressed." Most vegeterian vampires didn't stay in one place for more than a couple years, and for human-eaters, it was even less time. Nick himself hadn't stayed in one place for more than a decade since he was a child. "I live up in Forks, by the way," He added, then continued on. "Mark, I take it, is the one who changed you?" He asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Honestly, I can't remember if it was Mark or if it was his wife Kellie. But they have been very kind to us since Mark found us so things are going good. The thing that Zachary and I found funny when we first met Mark and Kellie was that they both look like they are in their mid 20's, maybe like 24, 25 or 26, and Zach and I both look 18 so if people don't know that they adopted us, everyone would get really confused." Gloriana said, giving a small laugh.

Nick chuckled lightly. "Confused or amazed," He told her with a smile, "Unless you told them you were the siblings of one of them." It would be believable for a person in their mid twenties to have a brother and sister in their late teens. But a young couple adopting was just as believable, he supposed. "At least your still on good terms with your maker, whichever one it is," He said, "My maker and I...we had a falling out not even a year after she changed me. I haven't seen her since." He didn't really want to see her anymore, anyway, so it didn't really matter that they hadn't had any contact since.

Unlike Nick, Gloriana wasn't one to not pry when a certain subject was brought up. "Do you mind if I ask what happened? Or would that leave it open for me to tell you my story?" Gloriana asked, squeezing Nick's hand, hoping it would help reassure him that she was okay with not talking about it, or talking about, which ever one he wanted to do.

He squeezed her hand after she squeezed his. "I don't mind talking about," He told her, "And you don't have to talk about what happened to you after, if you don't want." He paused for a moment, then started to recount how he had been changed. "I was hit by a car, way out in the country on a backroad. I don't know how Vera found me-by the scent of fresh blood, I guess-but she changed. Everything was fine, for a few months, until she told me why she really changed me. She wanted me for a mate. I told her, politely, that I didn't feel that way about her. But she didn't take it well-she attacked me. So I fought her off, and then ran away from her. Haven't seen her since."

Gloriana was horror-struck. She never could imagine going through something like that. Not knowing what else to do, she wrapped her arms around Nick's neck and gave him a hug. "I am so sorry." she muttered, knowing that he could hear her.

Nick didn't think that the situation was that bad, though it did lead to him being more or less alone for the better part of 62 years. The fact that she seemed horror-struck surprised him, and when she hugged him, he was even more surprised. After a brief moment of uncertainty, he wrapped his arms around her waist. "Its alright," He said, "I'm fine now..." He didn't move away from her, though, he just stood there, his arms still encircling her body. He liked hugging her too much to pull away just yet.
